Community Council Connections

Community Council Connections

We held our Term 3 Open Council meeting this week. It was a small group, but that did not prevent good discussions on a range of topics from school finances, book mornings and a very informative activity as part of the Be You framework. We also had our very first 'student voice' representative that brought us important feedback about the school, through the eyes of our year 5/6 students. We will continue to run an ideas collaboration session on ‘Why choose Sacred Heart Primary School?’, something we started last year, and will continue to do so as part of our agenda to capture new ideas from our community. The ideas gathered will be shared separately to this update, as we reach further into the school and get a wider set of opinions on what makes Sacred Heart so great.

In the Classroom

The Open Council meeting is a great opportunity for parents and carers to understand what our children are learning during the day. At this meeting, Brendan Mitchell ran a discussion on the Rock ‘n Water activities our Year 3-6 students take part in as part of the BeYou framework.  This was very informative and a good way to understand how students are being taught to use a strong voice and body language to communicate in difficult situations. Along with challenging themselves and most importantly reflecting on their actions and achievements at the end of the lesson.

An important addition to this open meeting was the introduction of a student voice to the Community Council. Mia, one of our Year 5/6 leaders, brought along some great discussions points from the senior students ranging from the positive enjoyment of gala sports days, peer support and kindy buddies program to improvement suggestions such as condition of the toilets and providing Year 1 students with their own play space.  It was fantastic to hear both the positive and negative feedback from our students and we will work together on the suggestions brought forward.

In the Community

From the last Executive Community Council news we reached out for ideas, from landscapers or builders in our school community, for a suitable floor covering to replace the harsh concrete in the interior courtyard. Please contact Kerry Wode if you have any ideas for this space.

As we start Term 3 the Fete is fast approaching and the fete committee are working hard behind the scenes to make this a fun day for the whole school to enjoy as well as raising funds for the school.  Please watch out for the regular updates in the school newsletter or via social media and consider helping out were you can to help make this day a great success for all.

The 50th Anniversary committee continue to meet and discuss ideas and events to make 2020 a truly memorable year for our community future, past and present.

Our parent reps continue to provide a conduit between the school executive, council and classrooms. This should help with ensuring every parent and carer has an opportunity to get involved in our school community.

Please do not hesitate to contact the Community Council via the front office if you have feedback or questions regarding any of the above.  We look forward to seeing as many parents and carers as possible at the next open meeting. Watch out for the adverts in the school newsletter.
