Staff Spotlight Mrs Thornton

Name:  Mrs Anna Thornton

AThornton_spotlight_1.jpg

Teaching:  3/4 Navy Wed-Friday

I have previously taught at schools in the Snowy Mountains area of New South Wales:  most recently, Cooma and Cooma North Public Schools, Berridale Public School, Jindabyne Central School and St Patrick's Parish School, Cooma.

I was born in Dublin, Ireland where I lived until my early 20s.  After that, I spent time working in France, Italy and London before coming to Australia in 1999.

My own Irish family all still live in Dublin but my husband, Michael, and I have four beautiful children aged 8 to almost 16 (Aishling, Cian, Clara and Lucy).

Do you prefer hot chips or chocolate? Oooh...definitely hot chips.  I use to love them very hot, wrapped in newspaper with salt and vinegar.

I love a huge variety of music from Celtic folk, classical, Bon Jovi (attended 2 concerts 20 years apart) to, surprisingly, a lot of music my older girls like.

If I could have a superpower, I would love to be able to be in different places at the same time.

I came to teaching a little later in life and previously enjoyed a 10 year career project managing clinical trials for a pharma company.  However, I always wanted to be a primary teacher and wouldn't want to be doing anything else right now.  When I was 8, I wanted to be either an astronaut, vet or marine biologist...Later in life, I would still like to do some teaching - perhaps in remote communities, spend time with family and travelling, and live by the coast.

I'd probably have to say Dublin is my favourite city in the world as it's my hometown.  I have yet to meet someone who hasn't loved Dublin!

What’s your favourite funny quote from a student?  Oh, there have been so many over the years.  I always meant to keep a list as I knew I'd forget them when the pressure was on.  Please come to my classroom and I'll have one ready.

Something that people may not know about me is that I play viola for pleasure in a Snowy Mountains quartet, called Pocket Orchestra (formerly Stypa).  We have even played at a number of weddings, which has been so much fun, pressure and a privilege, all at the same time.
