Learning Assets and our Interim Reports
Last year Sacred Heart formalised the language we use with the students to talk about ‘How we Learn’. We were guided by the ‘General Capabilities’ in the Australian Curriculum and the work of Kath Murdoch. We refer to the learning skills and dispositions as our Learning Assets.
This change of language and the adoption of it by teachers and students led us to implement a new style of Interim Report which directly reflected what was being taught in our classrooms. The Interim Reports created and used last year were shown at the PIN night this week and will be used again this year.
The Learning Assets are not curriculum based. This language applies as we encourage children to be life-long learners. They refer to transdisciplinary skills we need as 21st Century learners.
‘When we consciously engage young people in inquiring into how they learn, we are developing skills and dispositions that act as important assets to them as learners – across the curriculum, in school and beyond.’
K Murdoch ‘Power of Inquiry’ p97
The five Learning Assets that help us to be effective and efficient learners are - Researchers, Thinkers, Collaborators, Self-Managers, Communicators.
In the newsletter over the next few weeks the five Learning Assets will be elaborated on to assist parents in understanding what they mean. It is hoped that this then will enable parents to have conversations with your children about how they learn, using the language of the assets.
If you have any questions, please talk with your child’s teacher when you catch up early this term or speak to any member of the leadership team.
Uniform Policy
Our Uniform Policy can be found on the school website https://sacredhps.act.edu.au/policies-forms
Just a reminder that ‘hair shoulder length and longer needs to be tied back with natural coloured bands and uniform coloured ties or ribbons’– this means smaller in size accessories that may be white, red, navy, blue.
Parenting Ideas
We subscribe to Parenting Ideas. This is an online environment hosted by Michael Grose, which is designed to be a supportive community for all those working with children.
There are great articles, webinars and online courses available through the parent resource tab. We will advertise some of these through the newsletter and website. You can also subscribe to the parenting blog by adding your email address at the bottom of their webpage

The first ‘Insights’ for the year are:
- Making new friends and staying in touch with old classmates
- Helping kids affected by the bush fires
The first webinar is ‘Future-proofing your child’. You can participate in the webinar on the day, or watch at a later time. See the details on the site and use the voucher code to enrol for free.
