Self-Managers

Self-Managers can learn independently and can make wise decisions about their learning. They know themselves as learners and can set and work towards personal goals. They know they can continually improve as learners. (K. Murdoch ‘Power of Inquiry’ p98)

Self-Managers know that learning takes focus and means taking risks and making mistakes. They learn to manage time and equipment. They can be leaders and resourceful. Examples of times when we may teach the assets of being a self-manager may include:

• Think and talk about how we feel about our learning
• Make connections between what we know and new learning
• Stay focused on a task
• Use our mistakes to help us learn
• Set up and pack up for ourselves
• Think and plan before we start a task
• Think about the effect our thinking and behaviour is having on others
• Set ourselves a goal and work towards it 
• Persist with our learning even when it is challenging
• Listen to other people’s feedback about our learning 
• Take risks and challenge ourselves

Kinder and Stage 1 will focus on being ‘Responsible’. Stage 2 and 3 will develop language about all three – Responsible, Resilient, Reflective

Managing Anxiety Before it Becomes a Problem

Research shows that childhood anxiety left unmanaged will almost certainly re emerge, highlighting the importance of early detection and management of anxiety. Parents, as first responders, play an important role by minimising the impact of stressful moments before they lead to full-blown anxiety. Connect: SHPS Community Council 2021

The Community Council Executive met on Tuesday 23 March. We welcomed new member Elsa Hietbrink to the Secretary role – thank you very much Elsa for taking on this role!

This year, the theme of ‘Connect’ is a key focus of the Community Council. After the events of 2020, we think it is more important than ever that our Sacred Heart community have opportunities to connect to each other. We also want to focus on activity that encourages people across the broader community to form a connection with Sacred Heart.

The message of connection is one we also heard from our Year 6 leaders at our meeting. Our leaders were very happy with work undertaken by our Student Welfare Officer, Mrs Barrenger and asked for Community Council endorsement of activities to support Mrs B. Council was very happy to support Year 6 leaders further progressing their ideas with Mrs B and we look forward to an update soon. A student voice to Community Council is critical and something we will continue to support throughout the year.

With the Catholic Education Office enrolment period opening in Week 2 of Term 2, the Council also discussed ways to promote the school, encourage new families to connect with Sacred Heart and increase enrolments. Staff gave an update on the Little Hearts playgroup and upcoming plans to ask families to participate in a letter drop of promotional material as a way to drive enrolments. We would encourage families to start to talk to your connections in the community about what you like at Sacred Heart ahead of the enrolment period.

One way in which we will support the promotion of the school is through the installation of a new electronic sign at the corner of Beazley Street and Hodgson Crescent. The school will fund this sign in partnership with the Parish and it will be a fantastic way of promoting key messages to our community.

The Council also discussed vacation care arrangements with the YMCA and ways to further promote that service, new plans for the Canteen, plans for fundraising including the establishment of a 2022 Fete committee (happening soon – watch this space!), and further capital and equipment improvements at school.

The next open meeting of the Community Council will be on Tuesday 27th April, at 7pm via Zoom. We would warmly welcome you to attend and connect with us! A link will be sent the week before the meeting.
