This is the next stage to the Compas system that has been implemented by Catholic Education. Further information will be coming home next week.
YMCA 2021 Spring Vacation Care
YMCA has circulated a survey to parents about 2021 Spring Vacation Care.
They aren’t able to run the service unless they get a minimum of 20 kids per day.
Please pass on the link to local families at other schools. Spots are open to any children currently attending any primary school.
Please see the link below for the 2021 Spring Vacation Care Survey.

Hats On
It’s August - and that means hats on again for all ACT primary schools and early childhood centres because daily UV levels are once again on the rise in Canberra to 3 and above.
Drive Through
To assist in making the Drive-Through efficient for all -
Please make sure
- You have a family name sign for display in the windscreen (we often cannot see your face through the tinted screens). If you need a new one please contact the Front Office.
- You turn left onto Hodgson street as you exit
- All people involved in regular pick-ups know what is expected
- You don’t get out of your car (if your child needs to enter the car on the other side because of younger siblings open the passenger seat window to communicate with the person on duty if needed)
A Snack for Recess
We have noticed that there are some children have no food for recess. Please ensure your children are aware of what they could eat for recess. If your child eats everything at lunchtime - 11.45am to 3.15pm is a long time for them to go without food.
Does your child/ren have a drink bottle?
Whilst the weather has been very cold the children need to have plenty of water to drink each day. To align with our sustainability efforts, it would be great if each child had a water bottle that they can refill as needed.
Tournament of the Minds Volunteers Needed
Sacred Heart has a rich history of being involved in TOMs. The ACT Tournament of the Minds Committee is made up of volunteers. They are asking for help with judging on the competition days. Other volunteers are needed such as room hosts or guides.
If you, or maybe a senior highschool or uni student, who is familiar with TOMs would like to be involved this year, please contact Kerry Wode or access the link on our facebook page.
Our team has chosen the literature challenge this year and are busy meeting to complete the challenge. Our competition day is Sunday 29th August. We wish them well.
ICAS Assessments
A number of families have enrolled their child for the optional ICAS testing. The tests start next Monday with Digital Technologies. Dates are in the community calendar for the rest of August.
The writing test has been moved to Thursday 7th October.
Students completing the tests will require headphones and their iPads.
Most assessments are browser based but writing and spelling require the Janison player to be installed. Use the link below to complete a technical readiness test to ensure you have installed this locked-down browser correctly onto your child’s device if you have signed on for the writing or spelling tests. https://www.icasassessments.com/support-technical-requirements/
Keep our kids safe at sporting events
Play by the rules when parking at ovals and sporting venues.
Parking inspectors will be patrolling local sporting events throughout the year to keep our future athletes and Olympians safe - break the rules and you risk a fine.
Don’t park on footpaths, across driveways, no stopping zones, no parking zones, bus zones or in disabled parking spaces.
Can’t find a park? Be a sport, park legally and venture further afield.
You’ll be keeping us all safe and it will be good for your fitness too!
Please also remember to treat our parking inspectors with respect.
Like umpires on the field, they are enforcing the rules to keep us all safe.
To report unsafe and illegal parking call 13 22 81 or visit www.act.gov.au/illegalparking

Chess
Magic Number
Level: Yr2 and above
Equipment: deck of cards, paper and pencil for each player to write your algorithms.
Players: Any number
How to play:
- To begin, turn over the top 2 or 3 cards and add them together to find the total. This is the magic number. The aim of the game is to be the first to make this number. Let’s say we turn over 3 cards and the total is 15, so 15 is your magic number.
- Player 1 turns over two cards and can add or subtract to try and make the magic number. If they turn over a 10 and 3 they would write 10+3=13 or 10-3=7.
- Player 2 then turns over two cards. If they turn over a 6 and 7 they could write 6+7=13 or 7-6=1.
- After this, each player takes it in turns to turn over one more card at a time. If player 1 turns over an 8 they can write 10+8-3=15. Player 1 wins as they are the first to make the magic number. You may have 5 cards out before you can make the magic number and you can use 2, 3, 4 or 5 cards to make the magic number.
Variations:-
- a) Play only one round. The winner has the number closest to the magic number. (Easier)
- b) Limit operation to only add or subtract (Easier)
c) Use the operations of multiplication and division as well. Be aware of BODMAS (Harder
