Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to another term of learning at Sacred Heart. It has been heartwarming to hear the children’s many and varied stories of their break, with many taking the time to have a staycation, chilling out with family or catching up with people they love and care about. The holiday program at SHPS also offered exciting opportunities for those children whose parents had to work.
As we begin the new term, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your support and understanding as we navigate the winter season with staffing and teaching shortages.
The Feast of Mary Magdalene Saturday
Saturday we celebrate the gift of Mary Magdalene. In her new book on friendship Sister Joan Chittister OSB describes Mary Magdalene’s implicit trust in, and unconditional love for, Jesus as the bedrock of true friendship. She stayed by Jesus’ side and did not desert him when things got tough. This type of friendship knows all, celebrates all and survives all.
As Sister Joan states:
Mary Magdalene is the woman whom scripture calls by name in a time when women were seldom named in public documents… She is named fourteen times – more than any other woman in the New Testament except Mary of Nazareth, the mother of Jesus (p 81).
She was there at the beginning of his ministry. And she was there at the end. She was there when they were following him in cheering throngs. And she was there when they were taking his life… She tended his grave and shouted his dying glory and clung to his soul. She knew him, and she did not flinch from the knowing. (p 82)
As we remember Mary Magdalene and her place in our faith story, let’s give thanks for the gifts of friendship in our own lives.

Upgrade news
Over the holidays we replaced the broken gate off Murhy St. These ambulance, delivery gates will be locked to protect the oval and playground. Next to the double gate is a single entry/exit gate. We have asked the children not to swing on the gates or climb the low fence adjacent to the gates.
School Virtues
The school has been on a journey to reevaluate the school virtues so that all members of the community are able to articulate and action them. All staff and students in stage 2 and 3 have been engaged in this process and using the data collected we have reduced the number of virtues from 7 to 4. Respect remains core and will continue to be the virtue we focus on to begin each new year. This term our virtue will be nurturing our mind through being COURAGEOUS. We will continue to place information in the newsletter so that you can support your children in having conversations about courage.
Take care and keep safe
Children’s crossing safety
Children’s crossings are provided near schools to make it safer and easier for children to access the school. If driving and parking around the school, please keep a look out for pedestrians when approaching the crossing. Please remember to stop and allow pedestrians to clear the road completely prior to proceeding.
Children should be taught to make sure motorists completely stop prior to stepping onto the road, to ensure they remain safe. Please drive slowly and be patient near the school to keep our community safe.
Yours faithfully,

School Community Council
Please join us for the next meeting of the School Community Council on 22 August. For those coming along in person, please arrive at 6:30pm for wine, cheese and chat before our hybrid meeting begins at 7pm. If you are joining online, please let the front office know before 2pm on 22 August and provide your email so we can send you a zoom link. At this meeting, in addition to our usual business, we will have a focused session on the advantages of boys staying at Sacred Heart through to Year 6 so it is a great opportunity to find out more and to come with any questions you may have.
Matilda ran in the ACT cross country championships, she placed 2nd in her age group and
scored a silver medal!
She is very excited and wanted to share the picture of her with her medal.
CHESS!!
Learn to be a chess champion! Coaching for students at Sacred Heart Primary School is held on Tuesdays from 11:00am to 11:45am, starting on 18 July 2023.
Learning and playing chess helps children develop their logical thinking and problem solving skills, improves their concentration and focus, while also being a great source of enjoyment. Activities include group lessons on a demonstration chess board or interactive whiteboard, puzzle solving and fun practice games.
Students earn merit awards by making checkmates, or by displaying skills and positive qualities, which all good chess players strive to develop.
Each student in the Chess program will also receive access to Chess Squad
https://www.chesssquad.com/ which is an online teaching/playing platform.
If your child is interested in taking part in the class, please EMAIL for an enrolment form.
For all enquiries, please contact Sydney Academy of Chess on (02) 9745 1170.

Music
Last term in Music, we celebrated our enjoyment of Timmy and the Breakfast Band by trying out some circus tricks of our own. We created human machines, learned to clown roll and do headstands, tried out human pyramids, and even started to learn to juggle. Mrs Riley was very impressed with the perseverance, resilience and sensible behaviour shown by all classes - well done Sacred Heart!
Playgroup has started again for term 3
This week our new fishing rods were very popular and golf ball painting was a lot of fun.
