Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back everyone. We hope that everyone was able to enjoy a well-earned break from school and were able to take the opportunity to relax with family and/or friends. We have had a calm and smooth return to school for Term 2.
Assemblies and School Events
This term we are welcoming parents back to school assemblies and whole school events with the easing of some COVID -19 restrictions.
Friday Afternoon Assemblies
Please feel welcome to join us if your child is receiving an award or your child’s class are leading the assembly. Adults will need to adhere to the Social Distancing requirements during this time and register attendance through the ACT App.
Whole School Events
Parents will be welcome to join us for whole school events. To record attendance Parents/Carers or Grandparents are required to RSVP so we can keep to the number limitation for events. They will also need to register through the Canberra App per the ACT governments requirements.
ANZAC Day
“ANZAC” was the name given to a combined force of First Australian Imperial Force and New Zealand Army troops who landed on Turkey’s Gallipoli Peninsula at around dawn on Sunday, the 25th day of April, 1915, barely nine months after the outbreak of World War I.
On every 25th day of April for the past 100 years, “ANZAC Day” has been observed in Australia and New Zealand, becoming an honoured and sacred institution along the way.
Monday will be a public holiday in the ACT so Sacred Heart will celebrate this important event on Tuesday morning after the children have taken their bags to the classroom. Further details are included in today’s Newsletter.
Mothers’ Day
We will be celebrating the gift of mother’s and special women in our lives on Friday 7th May from 8.55am. This will be followed by an opportunity for parents to visit classrooms. More details be sent home soon.
Congratulations
Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Peake (Miss Bartley) on their marriage at the end of last term.
Professional Learning on Monday
On Monday staff participated in professional learning to develop fluency tasks in mathematics. We also spent time completing the next CATALYST unit online. This involved further learning on Cognitive Load Theory and High Impact Teaching Strategies.
School Photos
Thank you for your support in having all children organised for the annual school photos on Tuesday morning. This made for a very efficient process.
Take care and God bless,
Creative and Thinking Skills Lunch Club
Mrs Wode and Mrs Filardo are running a lunch club on Thursdays for students in Years 3-6. Any student interested in some thinking fun can join in. Any student considering trying out for Tournament of the Minds in 2021 must join this club. There is no cost for this lunch club.
Tournament of the Minds 2021
We will be offering TOMs again this year for students in Years 5-6 (we may include Yr4 tba). TOMs competition will run during Term 3 with competition days happening in Canberra on 28th or 29th August; Canberra Finals on Saturday 4th September and the virtual International Final on 16th-17th October.
A virtual final makes the cost of entering TOMs much less which means we can include many more students. Please talk to your child about whether they would like to be involved. They will need to attend the lunch club training this term and only commit to a team by the end of Term 2. Click on link to see the flyer.
Winter Uniform
As you prepare for winter uniforms a reminder that the colour of our tracksuit pants and school trousers is navy. Black clothing is not part of our uniform.
Also children have the option to wear sky blue long sleeve polo, peter-pan collar shirt or skivvy with navy trousers or tunics. We have adapted our policy to reflect this and thank parents who asked for clarification on this point.
Yours faithfully,

Mrs Borgia
We are commencing our Peer Support lessons next Friday .The whole school participates in Peer Support for 30 minutes each week. One Year 6 Peer leader will facilitate a small group of 6-8 younger students, who work together through a number of structured activities. Each teacher will supervise 2-3 groups in their classroom. Sacred Heart are working on a module called Living Positively helping us explore the concept of optimism. Our first session enables the children to get to know everyone in the group, agreeing on how they will work well together and interact cooperatively with others. They will also begin to think about what it means to be optimistic. We encourage you to talk to your children about Peer Support every week, as it will help to reinforce the concepts learned in each session.
SZapp – Managing your messages
SZapp is our main avenue for communicating with families. It was brought to our attention this week that some families were missing some messages. We discovered that not everyone knew to update their preferences to receive messages for a particular stage. So, within the SZapp app
- Select the MANAGE tab
- Toggle on PUSH NOTIFICATIONS
- Toggle on the name of your child’s STAGE group
We do not publish the security code for Sacred Heart in writing. Please speak to staff and other parents for our code or phone the office.
If you have the app for a number of schools, we advise you to select the DEFAULT SUBSCRIPTION to best suit you, and then carefully monitor messages from all schools.
Term 2 Events, Learning Journeys, Open days and our Enrolment Period
We are monitoring COVID-19 restrictions and hoping to welcome parents, carers and visitors back into the school for more events. Please monitor our communications carefully for how we will manage bookings and visits for Open Days, learning journeys or classroom visits, enrolment visits, Friday assemblies and our all-important Mother’s Day celebrations.
Open Days Save the Dates – 5th, 7th and 13th May 2021 Open days for current and prospective families.
We are aware there are many families across the school who have not had a chance to visit to see what schooling at Sacred Heart is like across all grades K-6. This year our Open Days will welcome current and prospective parents to take a tour and/or talk to staff about Sacred Heart K-6. Please save a date and watch for details.
Please Click Here for our K-6 Brochure, promoting the wonderful opportunities Sacred Heart Pearce offers from Playgroup – to Year 6. We encourage you to take a new look and to pass it on to local families.
