Message from Marist College Canberra Headmaster
This week I received a letter from Matthew Hutchison, the Headmaster of Marist College Canberra. I would like to share with you his communication about guaranteed positions at Marist College Canberra.
"Sacred Heart Primary School and Marist College Canberra have a long and much valued partnership in the education of young people.
I write to reassure your community that Catholic boys from Sacred Heart Primary School will be guarenteed a position in Year 7 at Marist College Canberra should families decide to keep their son's at Sacred Heart Primary until the conclusion of Year 6.
I hope this commitment will be of some comfort to your families." M Hutchison
Take care and God bless,

Most tests will happen early each morning, so please arrange for your child to be prepared by arriving at school for the morning assembly, with a routine start to the day.
Your child will need their device charged and their headphones at school for each testing day. If your child is ill on a day, we will endeavour to run a catch-up session. Please discuss this with your child’s teacher.
Please help your child prepare by reassuring them that NAPLAN is just one part of their school program, and by reminding them on the day to simply try their best. Teachers have worked with students over the past weeks to ensure they are familiar with the types of questions in the tests and will provide appropriate adjustments, support and guidance. Families are welcome to visit the public demonstration site at nap.edu.au to familiarise themselves with this online testing.
If you have any questions about NAPLAN, the online tests or your child’s participation please contact your child’s teacher or myself as the NAPLAN Coordinator.
Yours faithfully,

Mothers Day Invitation
The students and staff of Sacred Heart Pearce would like to invite mothers to a special assembly in the hall at 8.55am on Friday morning 7th May. Following this we welcome you to our classrooms, so your child(ren) can share with you some of their favourite activities and great learning.
No need to book, simply accompany your child to school on Friday. Due to COVID restrictions we need to limit attendance to one mother or signficant person per family. You will need to check in using the CBR app as you enter the hall and maintain social distancing throughout your visit. Please follow all directions of staff on the day.
If the restrictions cause issues for your family please phone the office. All parents are welcome to visit the school after 3.15pm other days with their child as arranged with the classroom teachers.
We congratulate Mr Mitchell and his wife Louisa on the safe arrival of their son,
George John Andrew on the 4th May weighing 4.01 kg and 51cm long.
Mr Mitchell will be taking leave until Friday 11th June and will return on Tuesday 15th

SZapp – Managing your messages
SZapp is our main avenue for communicating with families. It was brought to our attention this week that some families were missing some messages. We discovered that not everyone knew to update their preferences to receive messages for a particular stage. So, within the SZapp app
- Select the MANAGE tab
- Toggle on PUSH NOTIFICATIONS
- Toggle on the name of your child’s STAGE group
We do not publish the security code for Sacred Heart in writing. Please speak to staff and other parents for our code or phone the office.
If you have the app for a number of schools, we advise you to select the DEFAULT SUBSCRIPTION to best suit you, and then carefully monitor messages from all schools.
Canteen News
New to the Canteen Menu is a Beef Hamburger for $4. You can select to have lettuce, tomato, sauce and cheese (extra .50c).

CHESS!
Learn to be a chess champion! Coaching for students at Sacred Heart Primary School Pearce is held on Thursdays from 11:00am to 11:45am, starting on 22 April 2021. Learning and playing chess helps children develop their logical thinking and problem solving skills, improves their concentration and focus, while also being a great source of enjoyment. Activities include group lessons on a demonstration chess board or interactive whiteboard, puzzle solving and fun practice games.Students earn merit awards by making checkmates, or by displaying skills and positive qualities, which all good chess players strive to develop. If your child is interested in taking part, you can collect an enrolment form from the school office, or Email for a copy. For all enquiries, please contact Sydney Academy of Chess on (02) 9745 1170.
Olympics Unleashed Program
On Friday 30/4, Stage 2 & 3 had the privilege of welcoming Australian and Canberra Capitals Basketball star, Marianna Tolo as part of the Olympics Unleashed Program. The program is designed for Olympic athletes to come into schools and talk about their Olympic journey ahead of the Tokyo Olympics this year.
Marianna spoke about her career, her injuries, her drive, and resilience she needed to become one of Australia's and Canberra's best basketballers.
Marianna showed the students how to shoot the perfect basketball shot and spoke to them about how to achieve their dreams in the future. She also showed them her Championship Ring and Pendant as well as a bronze medal she won.
We were extremely lucky to have Marianna at our school and we gave her the biggest Sacred Heart send off we could, filled with good luck for the coming Olympics!
Sports News at Sacred Heart
Last week, Grace and Scarlett McCallum competed in the ACT School Swimming Carnival held at Stromlo Leisure centre.
Grace had a full program, swimming in 6 races and Scarlett swam in 3. Both girls did personal best times in most of their events, and we are extremely proud of them.
Roland Stubing competed in the ACT State Championships for Gymnastics over the weekend. He competed in the All-Round event and won a silver medal. Congratulations Roland.
Congratulations Olivia Galang who represented the ACT Raiders in the Junior Regionals Touch Football Carnival over the weekend in Orange.
Ashleigh competed at the Canberra International Judo Tournament on the 18th April and got silver for junior girls.
She will now travel to the Gold Coast for the Judo Nationals with the ACT squad.
Please don't forget to sign up to the Rebel Sport membership and list Sacred Heart as your nominated school. With every purchase you make through any store, we receive money to our school which we use to buy sporting equipment. Our most recent purchases have been new AFL balls, new footballs, and handballs.
Sacred Heart students participated in their first session of Peer Support last Friday 30th May. The Year 6 student leaders facilitated activities which enabled the children to get to know everyone in the group. The group then discussed and agreed on how they would work well together and interact cooperatively with others. The leaders introduced the meaning of optimism and what it means to be optimistic.
A wonderful and positive start to Peer Support.
Stage One Excursion
This week Stage One visited the National Museum and St John's Schoolhouse in tune into what life was like in the past. The students explored many different items from the past and compared them to items we use today. Wow! Things sure have changed.!
