Claim your missing jumper on Friday morning.
We have a mountain of school jumpers in our lost property. We have reunited any that have student names on them. However, there are many with past names, unreadable names or no names. Our clothing pool is fully stocked, so we are opening the flood gates.
We invite any child or parent to claim for free any jumper from the pile to replace one they have lost. Mrs Wode will be on the playground tomorrow morning from 8.40am.
Congratulations to following students on receiving their Sacrament of Confirmation.

End of May spells Hats Off Day
Yes, it is that time of the year again! The end of May is when we start to witness UV levels dropping off in Canberra to levels that are considered low (under 3) for part, if not most, of the day. It is also that time of the year when confusion sets in around sun protection recommendations in ACT school settings.
To keep things simple and consistent for ACT primary schools and early childhood services, many years ago Cancer Council ACT coined the phrase End Of May is Hats Off Day to assist these busy settings with their ‘hats on’ (hats off) behaviour.
So, in keeping with the End of May is Hats Off Day tune, all Canberra primary school students (and teachers) can leave their hats off for the months of June and July due to low (under 3) daily UV levels each day in the ACT.
The End of May spells Hats Off Day for ACT primary schools, for a few months anyway because the Beginning of August is Hats On Again For All Of Us as UV levels start to rise again in Canberra putting sensible sun protection behaviour back on the radar.

Mrs Borgia
Last week in Peer Support the children identified their strengths. Children explored the following important strengths - curiosity, kindness and teamwork. Through the activities, the children were able to recognise which strengths they possessed. They realised how important it was to use their strengths in different situations.
What does collaboration look like in the classrooms of Sacred Heart?
Today Year 3 were asked to reflect upon some group work they had been collaborating on throughout the week. The questions posed to them were: Think about their role in the group? How did the group work together? What were the positive and negatives of collaborating? What would they do better next time?
This student's reflection is a brilliant example of how students at our school are growing as deep thinkers and reflective learners. They are positively engaging with the assets for learning (Murdoch, 2015). This example demonstrates that as we grow and learn together, we are better able to think deeply about material we are investigating, as well as how we operate as learners.
Stage 3 Renewable Energy Source Exhibit
Stage 3 exhibited their amazing renewable energy models on Wednesday. The Year 5 and 6 students are to be commended on their excellent communication and understanding of their chosen renewable energy. Thank you to the Sacred Heart students and parents that came to support Stage 3.
Cooking With Mrs Kane
This week 3 Red had their turn cooking with Mrs Kane.
Kindergarten Excursion
Kindergarten are inquiring into the properties of materials. This week they went on a bus tour of the Recycling Discovery Hub at Hume.
What does great literacy learning look like?
At Sacred Heart this week Stage 2 started a new phase of our Sounds Right learning journey in literacy pods. The aim of this program is to break the children into small groups, focusing upon their spelling needs and helping them to build their confidence and knowledge around phonemic awareness and spelling. Developing the students skills as both thinkers and collaborators of their own learning.
Playgroup
This week at playgroup the children had fun with imaginary play.
We are starting a new section in the newsletter this week. Mrs Wode, with the help of Ryan’s grandmother, will be sharing a variety of maths activities to build fluency in numeracy. The children in Years 1 & 2 will be familiar with many activities. Others are ‘games’ that parents may remember. Have fun.
This week’s Maths game is Greedy Pig. Greedy Pig is a game of chance and a way to practise counting on.
Equipment: 1 dice. Paper to record scores.
Who: 2 or more. Each person needs a blank piece of paper.
How:
- Roll the dice and everyone writes down that number, that is your starting score.
- Roll the dice again and everyone counts on from the first number. Write your new score. Continue to do this until someone says they want to “sit down.” This “saves” their score and finishes their turn. That person records the score they have and doesn’t play any more.
- Each player can finish (or sit down) when they choose but if a 6 is thrown and you are still in the game, you are a “Greedy Pig” and you score ‘0’ for that game.
- After playing several games, add the totals in each person’s box to see who is the winner.
Variations:
- Choose different numbers as the danger number
- Use 2 dice and add the 2 numbers together
- Start at 100 and subtract the number you roll
- Roll 2 dice and multiply the numbers
